Howard Simons Graduate Fellowship and Undergraduate Scholarship
The Washington Post awards a joint graduate fellowship and an undergraduate scholarship with the University of Maryland to two minority students. The fellowship is awarded annually, while the scholarship is offered every four years.
The fellowship covers tuition and expenses for the master’s program in public affairs reporting in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. The scholarship covers tuition and expenses for an undergraduate who majors in journalism.
The awards are named after the late managing editor who was a mentor to many young journalists at The Washington Post. They were created to expand opportunities for minority journalists to enter and advance in the newspaper industry.
Previous fellows are working in newsrooms, including that of The Washington
Post.
