Tips for reporting candidates
Bullet Point Send us your clips by mail, not email. Please do not send expensive oversized binders that cannot be stored or copied conveniently. Computer printouts are fine. Don't send originals.
Bullet Point Send no more than 10 stories with a resume and cover letter explaining why The Post should hire you.
Bullet Point Ignore the conventional wisdom about not bothering to apply to a newsroom personnel office. All editors' No. 1 priority is to put out the paper. Resumes sent to news personnel get read faster.
Bullet Point Show us your strongest writing — your smartest stories, your versatility and your investigative ability.
Bullet Point Note that we almost never hire reporters without at least two years daily journalism experience. Even our summer interns usually have completed internships before coming to The Post.

Tips for copy editing candidates
Bullet Point Send a resume, a cover letter describing your experience and interest in working here and headline and /or editing clips.
Bullet Point If the copy desk chiefs are interested, expect to be sent, take and do well on a copy editing test.
Bullet Point If the test passes muster, plan on visiting for a one-week tryout.

Tips for assignment editing candidates
Bullet Point Send a detailed resume and cover letter describing your best work as an editor -- your smartest ideas, smoothest rewriting, deftest editing, best handling of difficult personnel issues.
Bullet Point Be prepared to take an editing test.

Tips for copy aide candidates
Bullet Point Send a cover letter and resume. Be aware that these positions very rarely lead to other newsroom jobs, particularly reporting.

Generic tips for all applicants
Bullet Point Don't despair if you don't hear from us right away. We have many applicants, and sometimes the flow gets ahead of us.
Bullet Point We value your interest in The Washington Post. We are delighted that you would like to join us and welcome your interest in our jobs.
