Curriculum Supplements

Each school year, new teaching materials using newspapers are added to the NIE program and its "Inside The Washington Post" curriculum.

The NIE program often designs additional curricula to accompany Post articles of special note, such as timely series and Pulitzer Prize-winning pieces.

Most of the additional materials address current trends or events taking place. During the 2000 Census, we offered schools a teacher guide and individual materials on the Census combining math, geography, social studies and critical thinking.

During the 1999 - 2000 school year, The Post ran a serial called "Orphan Journey Home". All teachers using the NIE program received free teacher guides to the serial.

Additional available supplements include:

Getting There
An intriguing introduction to a wide variety of maps — from subway maps to treasure maps to blueprints. Great stuff for elementary students.

Conflict Resolution
There is a way for everyone to win! Written by three conflict resolution experts, this supplement uses real life examples, activities, puzzles and games to help students understand and resolve everyday disputes. Recommended for grades 5-12.

Dear Author
Excerpted from a newly published collection of student letters to writers, this section introduces readers to a wide range of authors, ties their work to today's issues through newspaper activities, and reinforces the power of literature with creative writing exercises.

More Supplements Include...

Pulitzer Prize-winning articles by Post writers such as Leon Dash, Michael Dirda, William Raspberry, David Maraniss and others. Each story is accompanied by classroom exercises designed to cover the issues presented in the piece. Special Pulitzer Prize winning photography is offered along with classroom exercises designed to provide opportunities for creative writing based on the photo topics.
