Angela M. Tilghman,
District of Columbia Public Schools, is principal of Myrtilla Miner Elementary School. Ms. Tilghman began her career in education with the Archdiocese of Washington as a pre-kindergarten teacher at Nativity Catholic School in Washington, D.C. In 1979, she moved to Smothers Elementary School in Washington, D.C., and served as a kindergarten teacher. In 1980, she was a preschool special education teacher at Mantua Elementary School in Fairfax, Va. Ms. Tilghman moved to Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian School in Washington, D.C., as a kindergarten teacher for five years. In 1985, Ms. Tilghman became a pre-kindergarten teacher at Syphax Elementary School in Washington, D.C., where she remained for two years. Ms. Tilghman also interned later that year at Shepherd Elementary School in Washington, D.C., and the Management Information Services office for the District of Columbia Public Schools. In 1988, she became assistant principal at River Terrace Community School and Smothers Elementary School until 1990. She then became assistant principal at Peabody Early Childhood Center and Watkins Elementary School for two years. Ms. Tilghman assumed her current position in 1992. She holds a BA degree in early childhood education from Catholic University and an MA degree in early childhood special education from George Washington University both located in Washington, D.C.
